Rescue crews in Indonesia continue to search for the missing and wounded following the event. More than 140 aftershocks have struck following the 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the country’s highly populated West Java province. Twenty-five aftershocks were reported within the first two hours of the quake alone. According to the country’s National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), at least 268 people are dead, 151 people remain missing, and more than 1,000 are injured....
The F-35C is a Navy plane, and aircraft carrier landings are notoriously hard. But no branch of the military is immune to crashes, and both the Marines and Air Force have crashed planes this year. Post-crash investigations, pulling from the recorded avionics and telemetry data of the planes, can reveal the specific causes of error, from mechanical failure to choices made by pilots. In 2020, the Air Force turned to artificial intelligence to catch unusual flight patterns during training, before they become a costly or even tragic error....

For the Mayflower Autonomous Ship, or MAS400, it finally completed a mission that had to be called off in June 2021 due to a technical mishap. According to the Associated Press, this trip wasn’t exactly smooth sailing either....

On this side of the Atlantic, VW of America CEO, Michael Horn went before Congress yesterday for the first of what will undoubtedly be many confrontations. Speaking before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Horn gave a timeline of events, including an admission that VW’s chiefs knew of the emissions noncompliance concerns at least as far back as the spring of 2014, when West Virginia University published its study revealing that on-road emissions were significantly higher for VW diesels than they were when the vehicles were tested on a stand....

The FAA has been warning of potential issues with the 5G change since November, explaining that the expansion into what’s known as the C-Band spectrum could potentially interfere with some aircraft systems. Ford’s engineers created a machine capable of going 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and covering a quarter mile in just 10.7 seconds. Relying on the GT500’s launch control system, we scored back-to-back runs of 11.4 seconds at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s drag strip. But the old GT500 was quick at the strip too....
